The One Room Schoolhouse offers classes in the areas of creative writing, humanities, local history, poetry, public speaking, and Shakespeare. Genealogy is offered one-on-one by appointment. Teachers will find the Schoolhouse a great site for field trip opportunities. Home schooling parents and educators will find a consignment connection for teaching supplies and resources.

Goals at The One Room Schoolhouse:
*Help families write & document their genealogy and family stories. Each family's history is a part of America's history.
*Explore new ways to celebrate family.
*Complete a series of postcard books dedicated to Louisville and Kentucky history.

'Famous frontiersman Daniel Boone wouldn't have intended his postcards home from the wilderness to teach young and old about American history and life in pioneer Kentucky, but they do - that is if he had written them.

Boone didn't, but retired educator Betty Stokes has written them for Daniel. With 'Postcards from Daniel, 1755-1784; Daniel Boone writes from the Kentucky wilderness, Betty has written yet another history lesson with a Kentucky focus for young readers (and adult too!). Writing as if Daniel himself were sending postcards to his family in North Carolina, the reader learns about his life, wilderness adventures, relationships with American Indians, and settling pioneer Kentucky.

Combined with Emry Quinn's colorful illustrations depicting scenes from Boone's life, 'Postcards from Daniel' is a wonderful way to teach history in an engaging and easy manner.

Not to be forgotten are Betty's two earlier postcards books: 'Postcards from George' and 'Postcards from William' chronicle the adventures of the famous Clark brothers in frontier Kentucky (General George Rogers Clark) and success on the Lewis & Clark Expedition (Captain William Clark). They, too, are educational and engaging and an excellent way to make learning history easy and enjoyable. All of Betty's postcards books should be on young Kentuckians' book shelves.

New Concept

The One Room Schoolhouse is a delightful new concept created by Louisville educator Betty Southard Stokes. With more than 36 years experience in public and private schools as a teacher and administrator, Stokes has been recognized numerous times for outstanding service. The Jefferson County School District nominated her as a candidate for outstanding Kentucky Teacher in 1983. Betty was awarded Outstanding Social Studies Teacher by the Kentucky Council of Social Studies Teachers in 1985 and Outstanding Teacher for Environmental Education by the Kentucky Environmental Education Association in 1988. Between 1985 and 1989, Betty published educational packets with the Portland Museum and was featured on KET's EDUCATION NOTEBOOK. The National Education Association (NEA) recognized Mrs. Stokes with their A+ Award and she received a Stand Up Award from the Jefferson County Board of Education. The latter two awards were for neighborhood history projects that she initiated and designed. In 1987, the Jefferson County Board of Education trusted Betty with the task of creating magnet programs at six elementary schools. From 1990-2005, as a principal, her school's enrollment more than doubled and test scores continually progressed. In 2010, a Leadership Louisville Louisville Connector and a recipient of the Kentucky Historical Society's Award of Distinction.

Producing an old time radio show production of The Wonderful Wizard of OZ at the Woman's Club of Louisville. The play will raise funds for Indian Summer Camp (camp for children & teens fighting cancer). Audience will sing songs with us and help with some of the dialogue.

Children in attendance will be candidates for walk-on parts. Audience participation. All proceeds go to charity for women & children in need: adults $10/children $5. Free pre-show family activities.

Variety Show to benefit 'Indian Summer Camp'. This camp is held each summer in Bagdad, KY for children and teens fighting cancer. Doctors, nurses, and counselors all volunteer their time. The money we raise will go toward sporting equipment and craft supplies.

Chosen out of numerous nominations from across the commonwealth, this award recognizes the best history achievements and projects relating to state and local history. It is an opportunity to recognize the hard work of those who cherish Kentucky history. It honors individuals and programs that provide all of us with connections to the past, perspective on the present, and inspiration for the future.

We'll add a modern twist by exploring the pros and cons of using blogs and internet sites like ancestry.com to expand your efforts. Learn a variety of ways to preserve sepia photos and how to engage children in preserving family stories and family artifacts.
Charismatic Kentuckians
Part local history, part language arts, part theater production, this camp does it all. You'll enjoy a journey through Kentucky's storied past as you participate in a scavenger hunt during a field trip to Locust Grove; write a tall tale about a famous Kentuckian with similes, metaphors, and idioms; and perform in an original short play about George Rogers Clark.
